BUSINESSES in Hay-on-Wye took an unexpected hit as its world-famous literary festival got underway this week when burglars targeted several shops and a cafe in the town.

Seven firms, the majority of which are based at the Craft Centre complex off Oxford Road, were broken into overnight.

The Felin Fach Griffin near Brecon, which is renowned for hosting well-known patrons throughout the 11-day event, and Talgarth Rugby Club also fell victim to thieves on the same night.

Dyfed Powys Police confirmed that a substantial amount of cash and jewellery had been taken in the raids, which are believed to be connected, and have since launched an investigation.

With visitor numbers at Hay in their thousands during the ongoing Guardian Literature Festival officers want anyone who may have seen anything suspicious to dial Brecon Police Station on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
