A BORDERS MP has voiced his support for transparency during the ongoing expenses row as one of those who pushed for Commons speaker Michael Martin to stand down.

Brecon and Radnorshire MP Roger Williams has published a list of his expenses on his website and a statement which reads: “MPs are public servants and, as our salaries and expenses are paid for by the public purse, it is only fair that we should open up our books so that you can see how your money has been spent.”

But the Liberal Democrat Shadow Secretary for Wales, who himself claimed £20,486 in second home allowances last year, also urged members of the public to “bear in mind what that money actually pays for”.

The former farmer, who part-owns three houses and a farm in Powys as well as half a house in Devon, rents a one-bedroom flat in the capital instead of owning one and employs three full-time staff, as well as a party councillor part-time. He also spent £10,412 on travel around his constituency, the largest in England and Wales, and to and from London.

Mr Williams has reportedly also suspended any further claims for food until a full report on MPs expenses from the independent Committee on Standards and Public Life is published.
