THE May Fair was again enjoyed by thousands of people in Hereford – but disabled people didn’t have a similar experience due to poor access facilities.
That is the view of Hereford Access for All, a group which campaigns for better access for disabled and elderly people.
The group investigated the issue and found that many disabled people experience difficulties and would be glad to see the back of the fair.
“We are not against the May Fair, but we think that the rides should be accessible to disabled people as they are to able bodied people,” said member Arthur Moore.
The group proposes that disabled access should be built into the design of new fairground rides and that the organisers should think about allowing two carers to accompany a disabled person.
Abie Danter, chairman of the South Wales and Northern Ireland section of the Showmans Guild, said that the group tried to cater for everyone and some rides do have ramps and steps.
He added that he was in favour of allowing carers onto rides free of charge and would recommend this at the group’s meeting tonight (Thursday).
