WHATEVER the disaster – natural or man made – Rotary ensures its Shelter Boxes are usually first on the scene to provide life-saving basics.
Just what a Shelter Box is and what it contains was demonstrated in Hereford city centre by the combined efforts of the City of Hereford and Wye Valley Rotary Clubs.
Each box, which can be dropped by helicopter, has a 10-person tent, water purifying kits, stove and cooking equipment, tools and children’s activity packs.
“The people of Herefordshire have given our Rotary clubs thousands of pounds, which has enabled us to send Shelter Boxes around the world at a moment’s notice wherever the need is greatest,” said Roy Davies, chair of the Hereford City Club’s foundational and international committee.
“We are delighted to be able to thank the people of Hereford for their unstinting generosity and there was a lot of interest, with inquiries about funding boxes in businesses and schools. More than £450 was raised and we’ll be able to buy another box soon. Rotary is one of the few charities that guarantees every £1 donated goes direct to the people in need with no administration costs.”
Boxes are generally flown from the UK to the disaster area and delivered by whatever means are most effective – often based on advice from local Rotary clubs. Rotarians are committed to helping people less fortunate than themselves in their community and around the world while enjoying good company and friendship.
