A NEW CD by Hereford Cathedral Choir, featuring the music of Herbert Howells, has been released to coincide with the Hereford Three Choirs Festival, which starts on Saturday.
Well known for his large output of Anglican church music, Herbert Howells (1892–1983) was continually influenced by the landscape of his native Gloucestershire, and produced what is regarded by many as some of the most e n t h r a l l i n g l y spiritual music of the 20th century.
“The cathedral’s wonderful acoustic and world-renowned Willis organ are perfect partners for the choir in this kind of music,” said Geraint Bowen, organist and director of music at Hereford Cathedral.
“It is made even more special as it focuses on a composer so closely identified with the three cathedral cities of Gloucester, Hereford and Worcester.
“Among the pieces we have recorded are the three service settings that Howells wrote for each of the Three Choirs cathedrals, including the Hereford Service, which was first performed in 1970.”
The recording was made possible with the support of Hereford Cathedral Perpetual Trust and a number of private donations. The CD is available from the Cathedral Shop.
