A nursery at Newent has successfully grown 2,000 oak saplings for celebrations to mark the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar.

They were grown by Elmcroft Nursery, in Newent, using acorns collected from trees planted in the Forest of Dean on the orders of Admiral Lord Nelson. Those mature trees, close to Speech House, near Cinderford, are now 80ft tall.

Nursery owner Barry Wellington said: "Nelson chose his stock well. All the Trafalgar oaks we planted are now about six inches high."

Some of the saplings will go to guests attending a gala dinner in Herefordshire, organised by former submarine commander Ray Hunter. Others could be planted in Nelson's home port of Portsmouth.
