The Knapp Lane rat-run could be made one-way but Herefordshire Council says it needs consensus from the residents.

The council is planning to study surveys from when the road was closed for repairs to the gas mains to assess the effect of restricting its use on traffic flows in the town.

Its lead traffic engineer, Andrew Lee-Jones, said one-way is one option to be considered but the residents would have to agree which way it should go or what else could be done.

Mr Lee-Jones was responding to a concern from resident Margaret Moore, who lives at the entrance to Knapp Lane, that the council has been dragging its feet over the road's problems.

Mrs Moore, of The Coach House, has written to council after it announced plans for a traffic survey of Falcon Lane, another well-known rat-run.

She said: "Knapp Lane has been used as a rat-run for years and the traffic situation is getting worse, not just the volume, but the speed.

"I have been writing, telephoning and speaking to the council for the last ten years. Everyone agrees that something should be done. But what and where?"

On October 1997, Mrs Moore nursed a dying motorcyclist on her drive and last year a horse died outside her home, after it bolted and was in collision with a car.

Five years ago, Mrs Moore was one of several local residents who helped to deliver a questionnaire to 200 addresses, asking local residents what should be done to make Knapp Lane safer.
