A CAMPAIGN encouraging parents to ditch disposable nappies hit the streets of Hereford this week.
Parents and councillors have got behind the crusade, which aims to reduce waste by promoting the use of washable cotton nappies.
"Most parents don't realise just how much waste is created by using disposable nappies, but here they can see how it all mounts up," said Councillor Phil Edwards.
"Parents could use about 5,000 disposable nappies on their baby or they could just use 20 real nappies."
Green Nappies, from Ross-on-Wye, has set up a nappy laundry and sales service to ease the transition to cotton.
The company has secured Government funding, allowing it to give away 900 cotton nappies and can be contacted on 01989 760919.
Some local authorities have estimated that getting rid of disposable nappies costs at least £1 million a year.
Real Nappy Week, organised by the Women's Environmental Network, ran from June 20-26 .
