HEREFORD Fly Fishing Club held their 12th annual Junior Fly Fishing Competition at their own eight-acre trout fishery at Wellington.
With a current total of 24 junior members, including a number of girls, it was pleasing that 15 juniors attended with their parents for these friendly competitions.
The juniors were divided into two age groups, up to and including 15-years-old, and 16 to 18-year-olds. For the 15s and under, parents are allowed to assist with casting, but then must hand the rod over to the junior to make the retrieve. They can help again to land any fish hooked if required.
The weather was kind, and fishing conditions good. A total of 13 fish were caught weighing 28 lbs 9 ozs, an average of more than 2 lb per fish.
All junior competitors had a prize kindly donated by Sportfish of Winforton, with a top prize for the highest overall weight on the day of a Sportfish Fly Rod worth approximately £80.
The results for the 15 and under category were, 1 Ben Reynolds with three trout for 7 lb 10 ozs, 2 Ryan Prosser with two trout for 5 lb 7 oz.
In the 16 to 18 category, 1 Russell Peberdy with one trout for 1 lb 13 ozs, 2 Joseph Day also with one trout for 1 lb 12 ozs.
Club trophies were awarded to both winners and runner-ups. The Sportfish rod was won by Ben Reynolds. Prizes were presented by the club chairman Pete Williams.
The senior competition is to be held on July 10 at the annual BBQ at Wellington.
