Ledbury Town maintained their 100 per cent start to their Express and Star West Midland Premier Division season with a 4-2 win against Smethwick ST on Saturday.
LEDBURY TOWN 4, SMETHWICK ST 2
Ledbury started brightly and pinned the visitors back, forcing several corners which prompted some frantic defending at New Street.
Ledbury took the lead after a sharp cross from Stuart Smith was well brought down by Robbie Colwell, who powered a shot into the net.
More good play followed and again it was Colwell who got free but this time he slid the ball wide.
Smethwick were by no means out of the game and Ledbury keeper Humphries had to be alert.
The second half saw Smethwick be more positive and they forced Ledbury back, creating some good chances.
Smethwick finally equalised when striker Marshall scored from close range.
Ledbury hit back and a superb run by Stuart Smith saw him round several players before being brought down in the penalty box.
Although the spot kick was delayed by nearly five minutes as visiting players complained, Robbie Colwell coolly stepped up and sent the goalkeeper the wrong way for 2-1.
Ledbury now took charge and more good work from the industrious Gareth Davis saw him square the ball to Neil Gardiner, who scored with ease from 10 yards.
Again Ledbury let Smethwick back into the game and again it was Marshall who reduced the deficit with a low shot.
As Ledbury played out time, the visiting players became frustrated and several of the rugged challenges gave away free kicks. From one incident Javinder Singh and Town's Stuart Hall were both red-carded. Two more bookings were picked up by Smethwick before Robbie Colwell crossed to the far post for Stuart Smith to score with a fine header to seal the game 4-2.
Ledbury Town are at home again tomorrow (Saturday) when Brierley and Hagley are the visitors (2.45).
