Ledbury Town edged past Herefordshire rivals Wellington in an exciting end-to-end third round West Midlands league cup tie on Tuesday.

WELLINGTON 2, LEDBURY TOWN 3

The hosts opened the scoring after ten minutes when Robbie Parsons' lofted cross was met by Matt Williams at the far post. He squared the ball to Rich Jones to slam home from six yards.

Minutes later Ledbury's Mark Brookes rattled Wellington's crossbar with a firm header from Lee Hooper's corner. The score was levelled on 28 minutes when another Hooper corner was met by the rising Lee Clueit and his speculative header deceived both keeper and defence and rolled into the net.

Despite both teams creating many chances, the score remained 1-1 at half time.

Ledbury took the lead two minutes after the break when Martin Punt whipped the ball into the box and Stuart Smith swept home from eight yards. Wellington should have equalised moments later but Pete Wallace sent his header wide of the post when well-placed.

Ledbury suffered a scare in the 73rd minute when top marksman Robbie Colwell was stretchered from the field after colliding with the keeper. His replacement, Gareth Davis, helped Ledbury increase the lead with a clever through ball to release Lee Hooper, who coolly rounded the keeper and scored into an empty net.

The final ten minutes saw Wellington on the attack and in the 88th minute a Tom Herbert inswinging cross was met with a powerful header from Andy Price to beat the outstretched Craig Humphries.

Ledbury hung on to the final whistle to progress through to the semi-finals in a very fast and entertaining game that a good crowd thoroughly enjoyed.

Tomorrow (Saturday), Ledbury Town return to West Midlands premier division action when they are scheduled visit mid-table Tividale (2.45pm).
