I dreamt I sat upon a beach

That other people cannot reach.

A blind man came to sit with me.

I lent my sight so he could see.

To him all nature held sway;

He lent me hearing for a day.

As other people came along

Life soon became a song.

Now he knew day from night

And I - Conviviality.

There in the sunlight

In such good company.

Too soon our friends were gone.

And we knew, this, was the end

Of our joy. He said goodbye and left.

He had gone blind and I, deaf.

Now in solitude, I sit, silently.

But I am not deaf.

Oh no, with this open book

And my inner voice, I am hearing

poetry.
