HEREFORDSHIRE over-50s suffered another heavy defeat when they entertained Wales at Eastnor in the ECB 50 Plus Championship last week. Wales coasted to a nine-wicket win after restricting their opponents to 139-8 in their 45 overs.
After winning the toss and batting first the home county made a slow start. Ian Macklin was the only early batsmen to reach double figures, but then had to retire on 10 after suffering a leg injury.
Dave Benbow (14) and Brian Goode (16) reached double figures in the middle order, but it was lower-order players Clive Kendall (19no) and especially Steve Newton who gave the score respectability.
After a steady start Newton took the fight to Wales and belted two fours and five sixes in the latter overs before perishing in the final over for 52.
Openers Peter Hall (55 not out) and Huw Williams (69) took Wales to the brink of victory before the latter fell hit wicket to Dennis Malley (1-1).
The winning run came in the 35th over.
