A HEREFORDSHIRE initiative to encourage young people to understand the skills and crafts of building is one of more than 20 projects to be given Arts Council funding.

The St Francis project has been awarded more than £5,000 to look into the feasibility of creating an "Urban Design Laboratory" in the South Wye area.

An "Urban Design Laboratory" would be somewhere children could go to learn about architecture, design, building and other skills that make the world in which we live.

The St Francis Initiative is a charitable group that has already been working with children from Marlbrook School.

Funding is also being made available from the Herefordshire-based Elmley Foundation and Midlands Architecture and the Designed Environment (MADE).

Hugh Heatherwick, development co-ordinator for the St Francis Initiative, said he hoped the research stage would be completed by next Easter.

Additional funding will then need to be secured to create the study area somewhere in the South Wye.
