THE people of Kington are in party mode after the opening weekend of the town's festival.

Last Friday kicked off with the flower festival - 29 displays each representing a different country, as part of the event's theme of Around the World, filling St Mary's church with colour and fragrance.

Outstanding fundraiser Rita Langford then presented Ann Edwards with a cheque for £1,500 towards the church's stained glass windows appeal.

Saturday saw the town come alive with a procession of Tibetan banners and an official opening from local radio presenters Trevor Owens and Kate Johnson.

The day was full of entertainment and food from Around the World, including belly dancing and Wizard Wonky.

The alternative Miss World competition was won by "Miss" Japan - John Woodall, from the Tavern.

In joint second place were Miss Lady Hawkins school - Garry Turner from the Lamb and Bob Watts from the Wine Vaults as Miss Australia.

The town looks forward to the second instalment of the festival - the wheelbarrow race evening, which starts 6pm on Saturday.
