PUBLIC TOILETS - Concern about the loss of some public conveniences in Powys villages and towns, including Presteigne, has been expressed by Radnorshire councillors. Cutbacks are having to be made by the cash-strapped county council. But John Thompson said the whole matter was very badly handled. The closure of these facilities was one of the saddest things he had known for a considerable time. Glyn Morgan, shire highways manager, understood members' concerns but reminded them it was a matter of funding. The majority of those being shut in Powys were in Brecon and Radnor, he reported, stressing there was no duty to provide public toilets.
THREE COCKS - An application for the construction of new playing fields at Gwernyfed High School, Three Cocks, has been approved by Brecknockshire planning committee and the county council's legal department is now proceeding with the purchase of the Coleg Powysa farm there. Education chief Michael Barker told the council's board this was to enable a stage two New Opportunities Fund application to be submitted before the March 29 deadline.
