PETER Reavill, finds liaison officer for the Portable Antiquities Scheme, is at Hereford Museum and Art Gallery in Broad Street tomorrow (Friday) to help the public identify and record their finds.
Whether you are a gardener, metal detector user or someone who just likes looking down holes in the road, he can tell you what all those odd bits of pottery and metal you find may be.
Peter said: "It is the best job to have. There are not many archaeologists who handle, study and record such a large variety of archaeological finds and then get to meet their finders."
He is particularly keen to hear from people who use metal detectors.
He can identify most types of finds, advise on cleaning and storing old objects and can even tell if the find qualifies as 'treasure' under the Treasure Act.
The event is the first in a series. The next Finds Day in Hereford will be on Friday April 16 from 11am - 3pm.
For further information about the scheme either contact Peter on 01584 813641, or peter.reavill@shropshire-cc.gov.uk or visit his website at www.finds.org.uk.
The project is joint funded by The Council for Museums, Libraries, and Archives, The Heritage Lottery Fund, and is supported by Herefordshire Council, Shropshire County Council and Shrewsbury & Atcham Borough Council.
