Westfields 3 WorcesterCity 1
FOLLOWING the official opening of their new ground at allpay.park Westfields celebrated the occasion by beating a Worcester City side in a floodlit friendly.
Former England and West Ham United inside-forward Trevor Brooking, who along with Hereford MP Paul Keetch made the official opening, might have thought he was watching the Hammers as Westfields play in similar colours.
It must have brought back memories for City coach John Newman, the former Birmingham City and Exeter City centre-half and Hereford United manager. As a schoolboy he played many a game at close-by Widemarsh Common.
City had the better of matters in the first 15 minutes but it was Westfields who took the lead. Roy Jordan latched on to the ball just outside the 18-yard area and fired an unstoppable drive into the net. Midway through the half the Hereford club increased their lead through Paul Burton who hit the target with a lofted shot.
Early in the second period it was 3-0 as Jordan scored from close range after Burton's shot had been pushed onto the woodwork. Territorially City had a fair share of the play and well deserved their consolation goal netted by Darren Middleton.
