TWO college pals, united in their mission to help disadvantaged children, are set for an adventure of a lifetime when they jet off to Uganda this month.
Clare Westoby and Olivia Hopkins, aged 19, are set to spend four months in Kisiizi, in south-west Uganda, working in a hospital and teaching at the village primary school.
The girls, who first met when they were studying for their A-levels at Hereford Sixth Form College, will share a small hut with a third member of the team.
"A Ugandan cook will come in every day though. Apparently, there's a real art to getting the charcoal stove going," said Clare, a former Bishop of Hereford Bluecoat School pupil.
She has spent part of her year off working for Martha House, which inspired her to look into working permanently with children and young adults.
The 18-year-old said: "I wanted to have a gap year before going to university. I wanted to do something that was worthwhile."
The girls, who are both from Hereford, need £2,700 each to fund their trip, which has been organised by the Tearfund.
Half the money has already been raised through sponsorship, as well as from friends and family. Anyone who wants to sponsor them should call 07814 759969.
