Ross-ON-WYE swimmer David Smart is looking to make a big splash as he pursues his chosen sport.
"I aim to win the District Championships, enabling me to swim in the Nationals," he said. "I plan to continue swimming through my university studies."
As with all sports, however, David, who attends Monmouth School, has to come to terms with funding issues as he bids to reach the top.
"The main difficulties in swimming for me are entry fees for swims in galas, transport and accommodation expenses, several specialised swimwear/goggles and training fees.
"My parents and coach dedicate their time and transport me to swimming events while Ready Steady Win has helped me by funding essential training.
"It's important to receive support from my parents, coach and Ready Steady Win because I am encouraged to perform to the best of my potential. I am provided with many hours of training by my coach."
David, who used his bursary from Ready Steady Win towards a week in a swim camp in Devon, is Ross-on-Wye Swimming Club 15-year-old champion at all strokes at 50m, 100m, 200m, 400, 800m and 1,500m.
He has also earned selection to represent the Worcester County ASA and was selected for the South-East Wales Schools team. He has begun 2004 in fine style by knocking 41 seconds off his best time to become the Worcester County champion in the 800m free-style and winning the 50m butterfly at the Llanelli open meet.
David said: "My most memorable sporting moment was becoming County Champion in my chosen swimming stroke."
