IT'S 90 years since Hereford Choral Society performed Handel's oratorio Judas Maccabaeus, written in 1746 and first performed at Covent Garden a year later.
The forthcoming performance in Hereford Cathedral on March 27 is under the direction of Geraint Bowen with Orchestra Da Camera and follows the 1750 amended score.
Although seldom performed, the audience will recognise the well-known chorus, See, The Conquering Hero Comes, the tenor solo, Sound an Alarm, and the duet O Lovely Peace.
"It's a symptom of Handel's success that people don't regard this oratorio with the consideration it deserves," Geraint says.
"But there are some great choruses that people will know from Songs of Praise."
The soloists are Lucy Bowen (soprano), David Gould (counter tenor), Andrew Carwood (tenor) and Robert Rice (bass), accompanied by Roger Judd (harpsichord) and Peter Dyke (chamber organ).
Tickets are available from the ticket secretary, David Plowman, on 01432 274144 and The Outback, Hereford.
