Herefordshire Council hit the bull's eye with a £4.6 million bid to the Government to help build extra care housing for older people.
The money will go towards a £13 million complex planned for a site in Ledbury Road, Hereford, which could be the first of many elsewhere in the county.
In partnership with others, the council plans to provide up to 100 units for people over the age of 55, linked to a whole range of community services.
The council's preferred site is now used by Unity Gardens which will have to be vacated when its two year lease finishes at the end of March.
The ambitious housing project for older people is a partnership between Herefordshire Council, the ExtraCare Charitable Trust and Festival Housing.
A detailed planning application will be put before the council in the next few months and it is hoped the first residents will move in towards the end of 2006.
Fine details of the scheme still have to be worked out but it is expected some of the residential units will be up for sale and others will be available for rent.
