MOTORISTS hurtling through Pontrilas on the A465 on Tuesday afternoon may have paused for thought when they saw a stark plea from local youngsters.

School bus driver Christine Powell, who takes children to Ewyas Harold Primary School from Rowlestone every day - crossing the road at least twice with her precious cargo - joined local residents in their fears about the lack of a speed limit.

"It's an enormous responsibility driving other people's children, and having to wait at this junction to cross up to Rowlestone is nerve-racking."

Mary Williams, a parent and Rowlestone parish councillor, was adamant that they would not give up their campaign until speed restrictions were placed on the road.

"No one has died yet, but it can only be a matter of time. The fact is that it could be one of us."

Denis Elkerton, another parent with children on Christine's bus, said: "What we want is a 40mph limit, but anything lower than the statutory 60mph is essential."

A public meeting to debate the need for a speed limit on the A465 is being held tomorrow (Friday) at Ewyas Harold Memorial Hall at 6pm.

The meeting will be attended by Hereford MP Paul Keetch, and invitations have been issued to West Mercia police and the Highways Agency.
