URBAN design specialist Ben Hamilton-Baillie gave a presentation to Herefordshire councillors on how innovative street design can increase opportunities for walking and cycling.
This was followed by a site walkabout in St James and Bartonsham to discuss progress of the Community Travel Plan, which is being developed in partnership with the council.
"I think Hereford being short listed for the Government's Sustainable Towns award is a reflection of the commitment the council has made to projects like the St James Community Travel Plan," said Mr Hamilton-Baillie.
"Communities across the country are asking for safer and better designed streets, recognising that the dominance of the car prevents greater transport choice, particularly for children.
"There are many good examples elsewhere and in Europe and I hope they will be followed up here."
The afternoon walkabout, with Mr Hamilton-Baillie, St James and Bartonsham Community Association members, ward councillors, and council officers, focused on applying some of Mr Hamilton-Baillie's ideas to the St James and Bartonsham areas.
The local association is developing the country's first community travel plan, working in partnerships with a range of organisations, including the council and St James's Primary School.
A comprehensive consultation exercise in the area highlighted concerns about speed, safety for pedestrians and cyclists and the need for improved bus services.
During the walkabout a range of options were discussed, which could be implemented within the next financial year, including improved pedestrian space, seating, trees, and improved parking.
Officers are now investigating some specific design details.
