A THOUSAND portions of a popular British take-away has helped Hereford's 'Mr Chips' smash a world record.
Alan Williams set out to top the record by creating the biggest bag of chips to fulfil a promise to his young son, Elliott - and he ended up with a portion of chips weighing 805lbs, almost double the record of 397lbs, held by the Belgians.
After reading about the record in the Guinness Books of Records - a Christmas present for his son - Alan was determined to make his own attempt.
The event, which was authenticated by Trading Standards, was held at Hereford Racecourse using a huge chip bag measuring one metre across.
Now Alan and his staff are celebrating, although they are still awaiting validation from Guinness World Records to confirm the record.
Alan also received invaluable help from fellow fryer Marcus Lloyd, of the Old Stables Fish and Chip Shop, in Ewyas Harold.
