DR HOWARD Tomlinson, long-serving head of Hereford Cathedral School, has announced that he is to retire.
Dr Tomlinson's 18-year tenure at the top is the second longest in the modern history of the school. His era will end on August 31, 2005, to coincide with the completion of his chairmanship of the Choir Schools Association, a grouping of 44 choir schools.
Dr Tomlinson said that by the time of his departure the school's new development plan would have been put in place, enabling a successor to take the school forward.
He was looking forward to having 'more time to write'.
"HCS is a very special place. Over the years, I have been supported by a fine group of governors and staff, and have indeed been fortunate in having had the privilege of guiding the school through nearly two decades," said Dr Tomlinson.
Meriel Oliver, chairman of the governors, paid tribute to Dr Tomlinson for his 'wisdom and vision' and for maintaining high standards throughout his stewardship.
Dr Tomlinson's wife, Heather, will continue her teaching career at Hereford Cathedral Junior School.
