THE high standard produced at the recent Herefordshire Sports Council's awards for 2003 led to highly commended certificates being added to three categories.
Two came in the Junior Personality section. Jenny Rogers, from Ledbury, earned the accolade for hockey skills which took her to international matches for Wales Under-16 and Under-18, while Daniel Middleton, from Dilwyn, a junior-12 and above sculls rower took his seasonal tally of victories to a phenomenal 30.
Further up the age scale, there were two highly commended places in Services to Sport. Renowned cricket coach Jack Roberts was unable to attend due to illness, while Peter West received his award for services to football refereeing and cricket umpiring.
Junior Team of the Year brought the other highly commended and went to Hereford Swimming Club's Speedo League team. They gained Premier Division status as Division 1 champions and went on to gain a challenging sixth place in the top section while the other promoted team finished in a relegation position. One of their coaches, Viv Rogers, accepted the award.
