Wellington 3 Wednesfield 0
WELLINGTON gave another first-class team performance to continue their rise in the West Midlands League Premier Division table when they saw off the challenge of Wednesfield.
After pressing in the opening quarter, Wellington took the lead with a penalty when Peter Wallace was needlessly felled with a high tackle in a crowded box. Teenage midfielder Matt Williams calmly slotted the ball home from the spot.
They went two up in the last minute of the first period when Matt Pugh made a good run down the left and his driven low cross eluded the defenders for Wallace to steer home at the far post.
Skipper Mark Fish and Pugh, both recently returned from lengthy injuries, were prominent as Wellington continued to dictate play. It was Pugh, a constant threat to the visitors, who set up the final goal. This time he made a strong run down the right before cutting in and squaring the ball to Wallace who walked it in to an empty net.
Wednesfield were reduced to 10 men after some over-physical aggression, but Wellington refused to be intimidated and held their composure well to bag a deserved victory.
