Ross United Services produced a good, solid all-round team performance to move out of the bottom two in the Hereford Times Here-fordshire League Premier Division with a 4-0 win at Sutton.
Services' defence performed admirably against a Sutton team who enjoyed plenty of possession but rarely got close enough to seriously test Andy James in goal.
The home defence, on the other hand, came under pressure from the less frequent Ross attacks. They did have some excuse as they do have a long list of defenders carrying injuries.
Steve Gane scored the only goal of the first half after 15 minutes. As Sutton pushed forward in the second period, Bobby Hatch netted twice to put the match well beyond the home team. Adrian Robertshaw completed the scoring with a late strike from a free-kick.
Fownhope kept the pressure on the chasing pack with a narrow 1-0 home win over mid-table opponents Lads Club to maintain their four-point lead at the top of the table.
Fownhope enjoyed the better of the early play and were well worth their half-time lead. Ten minutes before the break Viv Howells attacked down the left wing and Matt Goodall was on hand to turn in his low cross. The home team created a number of chances but found the Lads Club keeper in good form.
Lads Club pulled out all the stops after the break and it was then time for the home team keeper Stuart Jennings to shine. Fownhope went close to extending their lead as the visitors' revival began to flounder.
First Gary Orman struck the bar and then Goodall got up to take a penalty after being felled in the area, but the Lads Club keeper kept his side in the game with a fine save.
Wellington maintained their challenge for their third championship title with a narrow 1-0 away win against Westfields.
The visitors enjoyed the edge throughout the 90 minutes but were unable to apply the killer touch and the outcome was in the balance until the final whistle.
Ross Macmillan netted the all-important goal midway through the first half. When Mark Hole's shot was fumbled by the keeper, he pounced on the loose ball and prodded home from close range. They had already gone close to taking the lead but the woodwork denied the home team twice during one attack. Hole struck the bar with a long free-kick and then Andy Williams suffered the same fate when he headed in the rebound.
Bryn Watkins, in the Wellington goal, produced a couple of saves to deny the home team, but then had to be replaced at the interval by Ian Grey after picking up an injury.
Although normally an outfield player, Grey coped competently with the Westfields attack and in fact it was Eddie Wells who went closest to scoring for the villagers when he struck the woodwork.
