HEREFORDSHIRE Girls Under-14 hockey team found the going tough but battled hard in the West of England Tournament at Bristol, drawing two and losing five of their seven games in a tiring day.
But there was good news for Aylestone School goalkeeper Simone Quinn whose performances in the tournament earned her a call-up for the West of England trials at Exeter, on Sunday, March 7.
Generally conceding size and strength to their opponents, Herefordshire went down 3-0 and 5-0 in their first two matches against Avon and Gloucestershire respectively.
They put up a spirited fight against Dorset to draw 0-0, with Emily Tompkins having an outstanding game in midfield.
Eventual winners Somerset proved too strong and ran out 3-0 winners, but Herefordshire bounced back to run Wiltshire close before losing 1-0.
In their penultimate game against Cornwall they came back from a goal down to draw 1-1, thanks to a strike from Sarah Sayce, but tiredness kicked in as they slumped to a 5-0 defeat against Devon.
Herefordshire Under-14 Boys beat Shropshire 3-0 but lost 3-2 to England East in a triangular tournament.
