YOUR ARTICLE on the Macmillan Nurses appeal (February 5) issue has prompted me to write to you.

My wife has suffered from cancer since 1982, when she had a mastectomy followed by secondary tumours some years later. At the time we lived in Essex, but moved to Hereford-shire in 1995. I wrote to your paper in 1999 to praise the cancer treatment she had received here.

Recently the cancer has again spread to other parts of her body which has resulted in us experiencing an even wider selection of the NHS, from our local GPs, Dr Elyan's consultancy, the County Hospital (including the Charles Renton Unit), the district nurses, the St Michael's Hospice, Macmillan nurses, and social care.

The liaison between all of these sources has been faultless, and as a result, we once again cannot speak highly enough of the attention she has received. We would like to thank all directly and indirectly involved.

Some people seem so ready to criticise the NHS and the local facilities. Perhaps some of those may be justified, but as far as we are concerned, our treatment as patient and carer, has been second to none.
