I HAVE no problem with speed cameras being used, but the one on Aylestone Hill would have been far better at Newtown Crossroads, which I negotiate every day.

Speed cameras positioned in appropriate places undoubtedly save lives, but when sited in areas that pose no problem are seen as revenue collectors, because many other aspects of motoring are neglected due to costly enforcement.

Irresponsible and dangerous driving can only be dealt with by a police presence, and as we are told that is impossible, due to cost, some will justifiably question the number of cameras, compared to the number of police patrols catching more serious offenders.

Huge amounts of money are lost, due to an inability to address other motoring problems, which again we are informed is related to finance.

It is estimated last year nearly 1.5 million motorists failed to pay vehicle excise duty, and that about 6% of motorists drove while uninsured!

It should be possible to devise a system whereby every vehicle's tax disc incorporates details of insurance and MOT, to deter evaders and ensure that the rest are not saddled with the cost of subsidising those who should not even be on the roads. If cameras could detect all of the above, just think what we could all save on annual motoring.
