The "No Lights at Newtown" pressure group will be holding a traffic count today (Friday) from 8am to 10am.

The protesters, made up of local residents, hope to demonstrate the volume of traffic passing through at peak times, following their fears that large tailbacks will be caused if traffic lights are installed at the junction by Herefordshire Council.

Up to 60 local residents protested at the junction recently, a spot that has one of the worst accident records in the county.

In four years, there have been nine "injury accidents" and one fatality, compared with none at the Trumpet crossroads, where lights were installed in 2000.

Herefordshire councillor for the Frome Ward, Rob Manning is in favour of the traffic lights saying "safety comes first" and that the statistics speak for themselves.
