Police investigating the death of Rachel Whitear are expected to announce a major development in the case tomorrow (Friday), the Hereford Times has learned.

Wiltshire Police are due to travel to Hereford and, in the presence of Rachel's parents, Mick and Pauline Holcroft, from Ledbury, divulge the next stage in their inquiries into the tragic drug addict's death in Exmouth in May 2000.

Last year the Police Complaints Authority appointed Detective Chief Superintendent Paul Howlett, head of Wiltshire CID, as senior investigating officer overseeing a new look at the circumstances surrounding her death.

The PCA, an independent body, agreed to supervise the investigation after Devon and Cornwall Police voluntarily referred the matter to them.

Rachel's story was exclusively revealed in the Hereford Times and then aroused regional, national and international interest following the release of a video by her parents as part of a hard-hitting anti-drugs campaign.
