CINEMA'S 'enfant terrible' Ken Russell (left) lends weight to this year's Borderlines film festival, attending both the opening on March 19, and giving a talk on his films on March 20.

There will also be a celebrity screening of Women in Love on March 19 at The Courtyard.

Regarded for his groundbreaking television portrait of Edward Elgar, as well as his feature films - including Women In Love, Tommy and The Devils - he is still shocking audiences at 76.

Delighted Borderlines director David Gillam said: "Russell pioneered a fresh approach to filming music with ground-breaking studies of Bartok, Debussy, Delius, Strauss and, most famously, Elgar.

"His film career continued in the same lyrical vein with flamboyant portraits of Tchaikovsky, Lizst and Mahler in films that related the artists' lives and psychic make-up to their work.

"He is a key figure in the development of British cinema."

This year's festival runs from March 19-31 at The Courtyard, Hereford, and venues including Eaton Bishop, Garway, Gorsley, Kingsland, Ledbury, Leominster, Ludlow, Ross-on-Wye and Yarpole.
