Hereford United achieved their first win of their pre-season build-up with a narrow 1-0 victory at Midland Football Alliance Chasetown.
But the performance failed to please director of football Graham Turner who was unhappy with the side's overall showing.
He said: "I've got to be disappointed with the way we've played. We've thrown one or two younger players in and I was expecting them to be scrapping for places on the opening day.
"There weren't too many good performances out there."
The only goal of the game came late in the second half, courtesy of full-back Chris Lane.
After United won a free-kick he fired home a spectacular shot from 30 yards to score his first goal for the Bulls after two years at the club.
On the balance of play United deserved to end up victorious but the performance was below par against a Chasetown side who showed a lot more enthusiasm for the contest.
The home side had the best chances in the first half when Shaun Bradbury, once of Wolves, had two excellent opportunities, the first forcing a good save from trialist keeper Matthew Baker before he fired his follow up went just over the bar.
Hereford: Baker, (Barnard 45), Lane, McIndoe, Beale, Gardiner (Wright 51), Clarke, Hanson, Snape (Williams 56), Tranter, Piearce, Pitt.
