PAUL Fewings and Mark Taylor are the surprise names among four players released by Hereford United.
Striker Fewings and experienced midfielder Taylor were joined on the 'not retained' list by goalkeeper Andy Quy and young midfielder John Cotterill.
Director of Football Graham Turner has offered a new one-year contract to defender Chris Lane, and plans to negotiate fresh deals with part-timers Rob Elmes and John Snape and experienced midfielder Ian Rodgerson.
Former Hull City striker Fewings, aged 22, was one of the Bulls' top scorers in an injury-punctuated season, and was on target in their narrow FA Cup defeat at Leicester.
Turner said: "He has had a tough time with injuries over the last two years, which has been one of the reasons for the decision.
"But I am now hoping that Steve Piearce, who was brought in last year to get among the goals, is now fully fit and can do the business."
Ex-Shrewsbury player Taylor, aged 34, has been a solid performer for the Bulls and Turner added: "He has had a decent couple of years for us.
"But there is a limit to the budget and we need to strengthen the squad. I shall also be looking to bring in a player-coach."
Quy has missed most of the season through injury and has been pushed behind newcomer Scott Cooksey in the queue, while Cotterill's opportunities have been limited. Quy is believed to be a target for Burton Albion.
Turner has already begun talks with a handful of potential new signings.
He said: "The Football League season has only just finished and we haven't had any lists yet, but one or two of the early indications we are beginning to talk to."
He plans further talks with Lane, Elmes, Snape and Rodgerson this week and said: "I would hope and I am optimistic that things will be settled in the next seven days."
The rest of Turner's squad are still under contract, with exciting youngsters Paul Parry, Gavin Williams and Tony James all signing extended deals during last season.
