ARCHITECTS have carried out a detailed survey of the Victorian chapel and mortuary at Newent Cemetery, ahead of a major restoration project on the listed building.

Newent town clerk Deirdre Rosser says there are cracks in walls, the building may have dropped on one side and tiles are missing from the roof.

The town council has already been in talks with Forest of Dean District Council conservation officers about the building's condition.

Cheltenham-based historic building consultants Bartosch and Stokes carried out a detailed survey of the Grade II listed building on Thursday (January 29).

The town council is still awaiting the report, but is expecting a phased programme of works, with the most urgent repairs within 12 months, less urgent repairs over five years, followed by a longer term repair programme.

When the work is done, there still remains the question of what to do with the Victorian premises, off Watery Lane.

Mrs Rosser said: "A few years ago, the council asked the public to come up with ideas as to what the building could be used for but nothing really materialised.

"We have a use for the building - as a workshop and store for the town council. But we'd like to see it put to better use."
