INTERNET users in Ledbury will have a choice of broadband services from next week.

BT has announced that it will switch on its upgraded telephone exchange next Wed-nesday, giving a second broadband service in the town.

The move comes after Ledbury exceeded its target of 350 interested parties in a BT registration scheme.

News of the move was welcomed by businessman and former town mayor Spencer Lane, who was the first customer in Ledbury to go on-line last year with the rival Loop Scorpio system.

Mr Lane said he would probably stay loyal to Loop Scorpio, as a satisfied customer.

But he added: "The more people you get on-line with broadband, the more it will help businesses in Ledbury. People can use it for electronic shopping and to send orders. For once, Ledbury is at the forefront of technology."

Broadband operates at higher speeds than standard internet connections and there is greater flexibility to move and download large files.

Another big benefit is that the phone can be used at the same time as the computer.

Broadband is already available through BT at Hereford, Ross, Malvern and Evesham.

Eckington follows on Feb-ruary 18, Colwall on March 3, Elmley Castle on March 10, Gorsley on April 21 and Severn Stoke on May 5.
