A PICTURESQUE country road on the outskirts of Hereford is being targeted by fly-tippers.

Mattresses, sofas, satellite dishes, microwave ovens and car seats are a selection of the items found dumped on Huntington Lane,on the western edge of Hereford.

The road, sandwiched between farmland, is a favourite with walkers, offering contrasting views of the Black Mountains and Credenhill Wood to the west and the cathedral and the city to the east.

However, the appearance of junk under a former railway bridge has created an eyesore which threatens to deter walkers from enjoying the idyllic scenery.

Nick Rayner, chairman of Hereford Ramblers, said: "It is a popular spot for local walkers who will pop out for a stroll with the dog after lunch.

"We need to get more people out walking near the city, but if they have to face things like that, it may put them right off."

Three Elms councillor Polly Andrews said she did not understand the fly-tippers' actions.

"Surely it is no more difficult to drive to the purpose-built Rotherwas tip and leave your rubbish there," she said. "We also have a waste management service, who will come to people's homes and remove three large unwanted items for £15."

Coun Andrews said she would do her utmost to have the unwanted waste removed.

"I plan to speak to the environmental health department to see if they can have a look at the problem," she said.

"Hopefully, the many people who enjoy walking in this beautiful area, which feels extremely rural despite being only two minutes from the city, will be able to do so without having to see this appalling junk."
