Ledbury Town caused an upset in the first round of the West Midlands Premier Division League Cup when they defeated high-flying Kington Town at Mill Street on Tuesday evening.
KINGTON TOWN 1, LEDBURY TOWN 2
As Ledbury settled the home side started well and dangerman Danny Hill went close in the opening minutes followed by a good effort from Mark Davies.
Ledbury started to get more into the game and superb work by Rob Colwell on the left saw him cut inside to beat three players on the edge of the box before he fired in a low shot to beat keeper Karl Rose in the 20th minute.
Duncan Preedy went close with a good effort not long after but Ledbury were indebted to the fine defensive work of debutant Damian Edwards, Marc Green and Chris Jones, who kept a pressurising Kington at bay.
In the 40th minute Ledbury broke out and a fine ball by Stuart Smith picked out Rob Colwell who hit a tremendous shot to beat Rose again and give Ledbury a 2-0 half-time lead.
Kington came back strongly and when a Ledbury clearance fell just outside the penalty box, Matt Morris fired a shot into the far corner to make it 2-1 in the 50th minute.
Both teams then went flat out for the rest of the game and although Ledbury were under tremendous pressure for the last ten minutes, they held out well defensively with keeper Adam Penny having an excellent game.
Kington's Gareth Watkins went close to equalising but Duncan Preedy also twice was unlucky with his finishing for a triumphant Ledbury Town.
