Putley will not get its pyramid after all, now residents have opted to refurbish the existing village hall and not replace it with a high-tech modern building.

The decision was taken at a public meeting in the village hall on Thursday (January 15), when around 50 people discussed the two plans on offer.

One plan was to build a modern building nicknamed "The Putley Pyramid". This would have featured solar panels and a large, pyramid-like roof above a square base. The building's cost would have been around £200,000.

The other option was to spend the same amount of money refurbishing the existing hall, which dates back to the 1920s and costs a lot to heat.

Hall secretary David Pealing said the pyramid design had its drawbacks, as it would mean the kitchen and toilets would be smaller.

"There would have been a small bar area, and no extra meeting room. The idea now is to refurbish the existing hall," he said.

A Lottery award could be sought for the work, but no time scale has been given.
