A COUNTY community hopes to get a long-fought-for speed restriction out of an application for a quarry in its midst.
The Wellington Action Group (WAG) has no issue with the quarry planned for 27 hectares of former army land at Moreton-on-Lugg.
But WAG is worried about the impact of the current application on the A49 - particularly as it passes through Wellington where there is no speed limit.
WAG wants a limit as part of the quarry 'package' along with other road improvements relevant to the expected increase in heavy traffic.
WAG founder Jayne Lane said that the present application raises serious safety issues. A roundabout plan proposed to slow traffic down was in the wrong place and would not be easily seen by road users.
Tarmac Limited has applied to extract around two million tonnes of gravel from the site. The extraction would be undertaken in phases spanning 10 years.
Once the quarrying was complete, the site would be restored as wetland/woodland.
None of the statutory authorities consulted over the quarry - such as the Highways Agency and English Nature - are against the scheme.
