A HEREFORDSHIRE hospice nurse on a mission to raise cash for CancerBACUP has had to postpone her plans after an unlucky break.

Jo Gilbert, of Bartestree, hoped to spend two days traversing 75 miles of the Milky Way Ski region on the French-Italian border at the end of this month.

But a visit to the Pyrenean mountains with her husband Pat and grandchildren for some last minute practice saw her returning home with a broken leg after she was hit by a three ton lorry in the snow.

Fortunately, Pat and the couple's grandchildren had gone ahead but the lorry slid on the ice, fracturing Jo's leg in two places.

"I'm indeed thanking my lucky stars, but I'm sorry I can't do it," said Jo. "Thank you everybody for sponsoring me."

Two thousand pounds had come flooding in to support Jo on her adventure. All the money has already gone to CancerBACUP so Jo is not able to return sponsorship.

Originally, Jo wanted to raise money for the charity as a thank you after it offered advice and support to her friend and colleague Debbie Smithers.

Nursing her fractured limb, the aromatherapist and bank nurse at St Michael's Hospice has vowed to be back on the slopes next year to complete the unfinished run.

"As long as the lorries keep out of my way!"
