A MAJOR proposal for a country house in the heart of Herefordshire will significantly enhance the area, according to its supporters.
Others say it will do nothing to add to the old English tradition.
These were the contrasting claims made at a public inquiry this week.
The proposal for Cwm Farm, in the parish of Walterstone, is from Debbie and Eddie Gittoes whose application was refused by Herefordshire Council's planners last year.
The application is for a six-bedroom house and four-bay garage, a one-bedroom staff flat, gardens and landscaping, restoration of a cottage and the demolition of agricultural buildings.
Planners do not consider the development would significantly enhance its setting and wider surroundings and say there is no special justification for it.
Timothy Jones, for Herefordshire Council, said: "All planning witnesses agree the development is contrary to the development plan."
Sebastian Head, for the Walterstone Action Group, said the development would not add to the tradition of the English country house nor enhance the immediate setting and surrounding areas.
But Neil King QC, for the Gittoes, said each generation should have the opportunity to add to the country house tradition.
Dr John Robinson, a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries, said: "Cwm Farm will certainly add to the tradition of the English country house and will be a new architectural asset for Herefordshire." A decision is expected at a later date.
