WELLINGTON Rangers missed a chance to move back to the top of the Hereford Times Herefordshire League Premier Division when they went down to a 4-3 defeat at Woofferton.

With leaders Ewyas Harold on Cup duty, a win would have seen Wellington move two points clear at the top of the table. But bogy side Woofferton, who won 2-1 at Wellington earlier in the season, managed to repeat their success, inflicting only the second defeat of the campaign on the title-chasers.

Woofferton, who scored all of their goals from set-piece situations, took the lead with a free-header from a corner after just two minutes but Wellington hit back to level with a penalty from Mark Hole on the half-hour.

The home side restored their lead, however, following another corner just before the interval and two further goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half gave them an unassailable lead.

Another spot-kick from Hole cut the margin but although Keith Jones, who flicked home with his back to goal, reduced the deficit still further Woofferton were able to hold on to their win.

The North Herefordshire side's goals came from Alan Hogg, Simon Lane, Jamie Marsh and Justin Wheatley.

Westfields have now moved into third place after trouncing city rivals Lads Club 4-0 at Moor House with their new signing from Presteigne, Mark Mortlock, claiming a debut hat-trick.

Westfields had most of the play in the first half but failed to make the best use of their possession as the period finished scoreless.

But a more direct approach in the second half soon paid dividends when Mortlock's initial shot was saved but only as far as midfielder Wes Owen who fired in the rebound.

Mortlock himself then got into the scoring action, rising high above the Lads Club defence to head home a Jon Hutton free-kick and shortly afterwards holding off the challenge of two defenders to shoot into the corner of the net.

As the final whistle approached, young substitute Carl Preece worked an opening for Mortlock to crown a memorable debut by tapping in the fourth.

Fownhope continue to climb the table after claiming a 3-1 success over struggling Pegasus, despite turning in one of their poorest displays of the season.

Easy chances were squandered at both ends as both attacks had an off day but the villagers finally took the lead five minutes before the break when John Morris fired home a rebound after his initial shot had been saved.

Almost immediately, Matt Goodall surged through the middle and neatly clipped the ball over the advancing goalkeeper to make it 2-0 at the break.

Pegasus reduced arrears from the penalty spot through Peter Richards but Fownhope sealed their win 10 minutes before the end when Steve Winmill advanced down the left and dribbled around the goalkeeper to net the villagers' third.

Hinton drew level on points with Weston in the bottom half of the table after travelling to South Herefordshire and coming away with a 4-2 win.

Weston started the more strongly and, after Carl Roberts had struck the woodwork, Paul Wooding ran through to cross for Mark Parnham to head them in front.

Hinton equalised in rather fortuitous fashion five minutes before the interval when Steve Whitford's corner sailed straight into the net but a fine strike from Wooding, who spotted the goalkeeper off his line and drove in from 25 yards, restored Weston's lead.

Early in the second period, however, the referee surprised players from both sides when he awarded a penalty to Hinton. John Williams levelled the scores from the spot and the city side then took the lead when Mike Marsden turned quickly and fired a low shot into the corner of the net.

In the closing stages, Ian Morris brought down a Marsden cross and hit home a left-footed shot to complete the scoring.
