SHORT MAT BOWLS - The St. Weonards based and original Sellack Wanderers Short Mat Bowls club, continue to popularise the game to many of those, who might beleive that it is a game soely for the very old, or for an elite type of people. With membership growing, and the setting up of a sister club at the same facility, St Weonards SMBC, the hobby/sport looks set for a good future in the Golden Valley area. The James Campbell Memorial Shield league has brought about some extraordinarily good games, and the pairs teams, who all play at the St, Weonards Hall on given dates, include this season Chase Edge; Sellack21; Kings Caple; and Archenfield. Nine teams make up the league for this season, and though it is still early stages, Chase Edge head the division, while Gareth Barnfield and Gladys Skyrme, hold on comfortably to second place. Friendly games with other clubs play a large part in the Sellack Wanderers fixture list, and several matches over the years, had been arranged with the Bulmers Club, and just recently, another such game was played with that group of people, but this time the venue was the Richmond Club. Whilst the Bulmers SMBC still awaits the new premises to play at, they share the Richmond Club's facility with the incumbent team there as well as another SMB club. However, the most recent match was a memorable evening, full of joviality, good bowling and enjoyable refreshments. Both Sellack Wanderers teams won on there respective playing surfaces: 18-21 and 12-18. The first half of the season however, had seen much more activity in the Singles Short Mat Bowls League and the new venture is being organised by the Golden Valley League of Friends, who themselves are a fairly new organisation, mainly raising cash for good causes, recently having raised more cash for the Air Anbulance Association. With ten games already having been played, Sellack Club stalwart, Ivor Skyrme, heads that league with 17 points. but after an indifferent start, his son, Nigel Skyrme, is closing the gap, and with two games in hand, has earnt himself 11 points. Gareth Barnfield is in third place with eight points and so is Gladys Skyrme.
