Leominster'S new captain Roger Barring-ton, fresh from a skiing holiday in Canada, was well supported for his drive-in to office.

Barrington, who runs an engineering company based in Leominster, joined the club in 1990, just before the course was extended from the original nine-holes to the present 18-hole lay-out.

Looking forward to his year in office he said: "We have made superb improvements to our clubhouse and course, and this is an opportunity for members to get behind the club and enjoy themselves.

"Any new members will be most welcome and, if they are interested, they can contact our administrator on 01568 610055 for details."

His vice-captain for the coming year will be Dave Pugh.

n Kington golfers are hardy souls, a characteristic well tested when their January stableford was interrupted by a wintry squall.

One advantage of Bradnor Hill is that they could see it coming and had time to wrap up before braving the sharp hail shower, which, although briefly covering the course, soon cleared in the following sunshine.

Results, overall winner: Roger Richards 39 pts; division 1 (0-9): 1 Lee Wilson 37, 2 Alan Williams 37; division 2 (10-15): 1 David Lees 38, 2 Murray Mackintosh 38; division 3 (16-28): 1 Alfie Roberts 37, 2 Bob Bowen 32.
