GRAHAM Turner believes he still needs three players to boost Hereford United's promotion hopes.
The Edgar Street boss has one of the smallest squads in the Conference, leaving it susceptible to injury and suspension.
Defender Andy Tretton is currently out of action well into the New Year with his longstanding thigh injury while his replacement, loan signing Tamika Mkandawire, has returned to West Bromwich Albion after two months.
Turner revealed he came close to bringing in a defender last week but pulled out of the deal following reports over his attitude.
The Bulls boss has this week disclosed his guidelines for signing players which revolve around four questions: Is he good enough? Will he drop into the Conference? Can we afford him? Is he of the right character?
"The last factor is crucial when signing a player," says Turner. "We do our homework by asking his former managers and playing colleagues what sort of lad he is around the club, what's he like in training and generally whether he is a 'good pro'.
"If we avoid injuries, I think we still need to add three players, whether on loan or permanently, ant that's not taking into account any problems with the present squad."
Turner paid tribute to his side following their successful first half of the season.
The Bulls are lying second in the Conference behind Chester City and after weathering a difficult November are in good heart to tackle the festive programme. Defeats to Leigh RMI, Accrington Stanley and Shrewsbury Town have been put firmly behind them with consecutive victories against Halifax Town and Farnborough Town.
Meanwhile, Hereford's promotion rivals Exeter City, who play the Bulls twice over Christmas, will bid to overturn a 12 point penalty on December 16.
The points have been docked because by the Conference because the Grecians have gone into administration The club has debts of about £4.8 million.
