Ledbury 1st XV produced an inspired performance to defeat a confident Shipston team in this Midlands Three West (South) fixture on Saturday.
SHIPSTON ON STOUR 6pts, LEDBURY 11pts
Ledbury fielded a side which included veteran front rows Chris Kitching and Steve Green and a welcome return to 1st XV action from Simon Christian.
Ledbury started well, repelling the Shipston attacks and themselves looking dangerous in attack. Ledbury soon found themselves 5-0 in front with Henry Blandford scoring his first try of the season after a great break from classy full back Pete Elkington.
The first half continued with Ledbury looking the better team, but at half time, Ledbury, despite having the advantage of a huge slope were only 5-3 up.
Ledbury continued to battle hard with Steve Green epitomising the effort of the side by stealing three scrummages against the head.
Darren Lynch and Russ Putland controlled the defence with ease and winger Lee Douglas provided an attacking threat every time he had the ball.
Ledbury's work rate was beginning to tell on the tiring Shipston side with Allen Dixon, Simon Christian, Matt Williams, Denver Rollings and the very impressive James Handley all relishing the task.
For Ledbury to win, it came down to the ever-reliable boot of Barrett Price who slotted over two pressure penalties to lead Ledbury to an impressive win. Winger Ollie Kaye came on with 10 mins remaining to chalk up his 200th first team game.
Tomorrow (Saturday) Ledbury are at home to old rivals Silhillians in another vital league game. All support would be appreciated.
